Previous people counting systems required the infrared sensor and human body detection sensor near the target gate and counted people one by one. Therefore, existing systems cannot count people exactly, when multiple people pass through the gate at the same time. So, they are not appropriate to be applied to the wide space, but a narrow path to detect the passing of multiple pedestrians. To make up for the detect, in this paper a mat using arrays of piezoelectric sensors has been applied and installed on the floor. The designed system can detect the contact shape of pedestrians to sensors and their number so that it can calculate directions of their movement and exact number of pedestrians. The sensor mat module can decide the direction where a pedestrian moves to and increases the corresponding people counter depending on the direction, when pedestrians contact with the mat. The calculated number on the counter in each direction is sent to the dedicated smart phone application. The application shows the number of people in each direction that has been transmitted from the sensor mat, and calculates the total number of people by using two people counters of both directions.
